- It looks up Lunar New Year for your birth year, from a table of every year from 1923 to 2044.
- If your birthday is on or after that date, your zodiac year is your birth year. If it is before, your zodiac year is the year before.
- The animal comes from the zodiac year's place in the 12-year cycle, and the element from its last digit.

Why your sign follows Lunar New Year, not January 1
The zodiac runs on the Chinese lunar calendar. Each animal year starts on Lunar New Year, which falls on a different day between January 21 and February 20. If your birthday comes before that day, you belong to the previous year's animal.
That is why a site that only asks for your birth year can give the wrong answer to anyone born in January or February.
